Title I

Program Description

Title I provides supplemental funding to districts for resources to help schools with high concentrations of students from low-income families.   The purpose of the funding is to provide a high-quality education that will enable all students to meet the state’s student performance standards.  Title I, Part A supports schools in implementing either a school-wide program or a targeted assistance program.   These programs must use effective methods and instructional strategies that are grounded in scientifically based research.

Parent Resources

  • Title I  – School Improvement
    • The School Improvement Program provides supplemental funds to Title I campuses that fail to make adequate yearly progress (AYP) for two or more consecutive years.   Campuses that are in school improvement must revise the campus improvement plan to incorporate additional instructional strategies based on scientifically based research to improve student performance on state standards.

A student attending a Title I campus that enters school improvement status must be provided the option to transfer to another campus within the district.   In determining campus transfers, the district must give priority to the lowest achieving students from low income families.

  • Title I - Supplemental Educational Services or free tutoring

    • Title I, Part A campuses that are identified for School Improvement, Stage 2 or above are required to arrange for Supplemental Educational Services (SES) for students from low-income families.

Supplemental Educational Services may include tutoring, remediation and other interventions provided outside of the regular school day.  All students from low-income families are eligible to request SES if they attend a campus that has failed to meet AYP for three or more consecutive years.   However, if funds are insufficient for the district to meet all requests for SES, the district must give priority to the lowest achieving students from low-income families.

    • B. F. Terry High School is the only LCISD Campus required to offer SES or Free Tutoring.
