Lamar CISD Receives Technology, Therapeutic Support Grants from The George Foundation

Nov 22, 2020 | Community Relations

Lamar Consolidated Independent School District is pleased to announce it has received two grant awards from The George Foundation totaling $1,225,000. The grant funds will be used to purchase internet hotspots and monthly service for more than 3,000 Lamar CISD families struggling to connect online, as well as expand the partnership with Houston-Galveston Institute (HGI) to provide therapeutic support for 24 additional campuses in the District.

“The hotspot service will help students and families access District and campus resources to support continued learning at home,” said Dr. Jon Maxwell, executive director of Student Programs at Lamar CISD. “Additionally, the expanded partnership with HGI therapists will support students in need through collaboration, clinical and counseling services.”

Lamar CISD staff members have worked diligently over the last few months to ensure every student with a need received a technology device to learn at home due to COVID-19. By providing hotspots and monthly service for students that lack these critical resources, Lamar CISD families will no longer have to use alternate locations to attend online classes and submit assigned schoolwork.

The grant from The George Foundation also allows Lamar CISD to have HGI therapists available both onsite and virtually at 37 schools to provide counseling services for all age groups, easing the transition back to school.

“We’re grateful to The George Foundation for their generous contributions,” said Lamar CISD Superintendent Dr. Thomas Randle. “These grants help ensure all Lamar CISD students have access to the resources they need to be successful.”
