Starting the 2024-2025 school year, Lamar CISD adopted a new form of school-to-home communication called ParentSquare. This unified communications platform is designed to keep parents and guardians informed and encourage greater engagement and connection with Lamar CISD. Nivens’ News – October 2024

Hear from Lamar CISD Superintendent Dr. Roosevelt Nivens as he updates us on the latest and greatest from across the District including metal detectors for fans entering Traylor Stadium, followed by a look back at the excitement as we celebrated the Lamar CISD community at our annual Promise to Parents Brunch. Dr. Nivens includes a reminder about the upcoming College, Career and Military Readiness Night at Lamar CHS. Finally, stay tuned for the launch of a new District mass communication tool after fall break.

Campus Leaders Announced as Principals for the 2024-2025 School Year

We would like to announce a few new campus leadership assignments. We are glad to share more about the individuals who have been selected to lead and serve our campuses as principals during the 2024-2025 school year:


Sherryl Anthony
Wright Junior High
Principal
Marilyn Cooper
Travis Elementary
Principal

Sherryl Anthony is moving up from the assistant principal to principal at Wright Junior High. Ms. Anthony has 11 years of experience in education including seven years of teaching experience, one year as an academic facilitator, and three years as an assistant principal. Ms. Anthony graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Science. She received a Master’s degree in Administration and Supervision from the University of Houston-Victoria.

Marilyn Cooper is moving from the assistant principal at Adolphus Elementary to principal at Travis Elementary. Ms. Cooper has 17 years of experience in education. Before her role at Adolphus, she was a math facilitator at Velasquez Elementary, and a teacher at Williams Elementary. Ms. Cooper received a Master’s Degree in Education Administration from Lamar University and is currently working on a Doctoral Degree at Houston Christian University.

Carrie Flores is joining Lamar CISD as principal at Hubenak Elementary. Ms. Flores has 25 years of experience in education, including seven years of teaching experience, 14 years as an assistant principal, and four years as a principal. Ms. Flores graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelor’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies, and she received a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from California State University.  

Nancy Garcia is moving up from assistant principal at Arredondo Elementary to principal at Ray Elementary. Ms. Garcia has 22 years of experience in education including 15 years of teaching experience, four years as a literacy coach, and three years as an assistant principal. Ms. Garcia graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelor’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. She received a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Houston-Victoria.

Principal

Janice Harvey is moving from principal at Austin Elementary to principal at Bernard Clifton Terrell Jr. Elementary, which is a new campus that will open in 2024-2025. Ms. Harvey has 29 years of experience in education including 14 years as a teacher, seven years as an assistant principal, and eight years as a principal. Ms. Harvey graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. She received a Master’s degree in Administration and Supervision from the University of Houston-Victoria.  

Steffenie Horelica is moving up from assistant principal to principal at Austin Elementary. Ms. Horelica has 16 years of experience in education including three years as a paraprofessional, three years as a teacher, five years as a reading facilitator, three years as a literacy coach, and two years as an assistant principal. Ms. Horelica graduated from the University of Houston-Victoria with a Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. She received a Master’s degree in 2014 in Educational Administration from Lamar University.

Rochelle Horton is joining Lamar CISD as principal at Meyer Elementary. Ms. Horton has 32 years of experience in education, including eight years of teaching experience, two years as a curriculum facilitator, three years as an assistant principal, and 19 years as a principal. Ms. Horton graduated from the University of Texas with a Bachelor’s degree in Education. She received a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from Prairie View A&M University.

Mike Semmler is moving from principal at Leaman Junior High to principal at Lamar Junior High. Mr. Semmler has 26 years of experience in education including three years of teaching experience, two years as an instructional technologist, three years as an assistant principal, and 18 years as a principal. Mr. Semmler received both his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from the University of South Dakota.

Laura Spiegel is moving up from assistant principal to principal at Beasley Elementary. Ms. Spiegel has 10 years of experience in education including five years as a teacher, one year as a reading facilitator, two years as a literacy coach, and three years as an assistant principal. She graduated from Harding University with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. She received a Master’s degree in Educational Administration from Lamar University.   

Trey Watkins is moving from associate principal at Fulshear High to principal at Leaman Junior High. Mr. Watkins has nine years of experience in education, including four years of teaching experience, four years as an assistant principal, and one year as associate principal. Mr. Watkins graduated from the University of North Texas with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science. He received a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Houston-Victoria.
