Child Nutrition Recognized by Texas Agriculture Commissioner

Feb 20, 2019 | Community Relations

Lamar CISD's Child Nutrition department has been recognized by Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller as “Best of the Bunch” in the Farm Fresh Challenge.

Each fall, the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) hosts their annual Farm Fresh Challenge for Texas school districts. The Challenge is a fun and engaging way for school nutrition professionals and their schools to gain recognition for their efforts to bring local foods and garden-based learning activities to their students.

District’s display their commitment to the community through using Texas agriculture to teach children about healthy lifestyles. $2.6 million was spent on local produce by participating districts, which directly supported the local economy by growing jobs and keeping businesses thriving.

This is the fourth consecutive year that Child Nutrition has obtained the highest achievement in the challenge and the department will be recognized in June at the Business of Numbers and Nutrition Conference in Austin, TX.
