March is National Nutrition Month® and this year the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is using the theme "Go Further with Food". The idea behind this is fueling your body with nutritious foods to make the biggest impact in your activities as well as reducing food waste. A large factor in food waste can be confusion between food date stamps.
Let's test your knowledge, do you know the difference in the following date stamps?
- USE BY MARCH 31, 2018
- BEST BY MARCH 31, 2018
- BEST BEFORE MARCH 31, 2018
- SELL BY MARCH 31, 2018
Many individuals consider these to be expiration dates and dispose of food either just before this date or on the day of. However, manufactures provide these dates based on what they consider to be the best quality for that specific item. For example, "Use by", "Best by" and "Best Before" dates are often found on condiments, such as mustard and ketchup. In many cases, these items are safe to eat beyond the date stamp, if they have been stored properly.
"Sell by" dates are used for perishable foods, such as meats and dairy products. It's possible these foods may be used a few days after the date, as long as they were stored at a safe temperature.
Another big event this month for our schools is National School Breakfast Week, March 5-9th. The Texas Department of Agriculture challenges all campuses to "Dive into a Healthy School Breakfast". Research shows and school professionals know that starting the day with a healthy breakfast helps students learn and focus better in the classroom. All of our schools were provided posters to celebrate and elementary schools were given pencils and breakfast stickers to build excitement among the students. Many campuses went above and beyond to show our students why breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
