Lamar CISD’s Common Threads, the Texas Children’s Health Plan and Children’s Dentistry of Texas combined forces July 25 to provide school supplies and clothing for the areas needy families.
More than 1,200 students, from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, received assistance at the annual Hope on the Brazos event, held at Lamar CISD’s Common Threads. In all, more than 3,000 attended the annual back-to-school event.
In addition to a backpack filled with school supplies, families had the opportunity to “shop” Common Threads to find the basics needed to begin school, including uniform and non-uniform clothing, socks, shoes, underwear and accessories.
More than 75 volunteers provided face-painting and popcorn, as well as helping clients. More than 30 agencies provided health, safety, nutrition, dental and vaccination information to the many families at the event.
Common Threads is the Lamar CISD assistance program, providing school clothing and supplies to those students who might otherwise go without.
Common Threads accepts donations throughout the year. Needed items include:
• Clothing, especially school uniforms, size 4-XXL;
• New socks and undergarments;
• Shoes;
• Toiletries (soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant);
• Coats;
• Accessories (belts, purses, warm hats, etc.)
• Backpacks; and
• Tax deductible cash or check.
Parents, student organizations and community members are all welcome to volunteer at Common Threads. Volunteers can help at the campus level by assisting the school nurse with clothing drives and organizing the donations. They can also volunteer at Common Threads and assist with washing, folding and sorting clothes; filling orders and assisting parents and students with clothing selections.
