Lamar CISD seeks parents to serve as surrogates

Sep 19, 2014 | Community Relations

The Lamar CISD Special Education Department is in need of parent volunteers to assist as advocates for residential facility students.

The individuals with Disabilities Education Act requires state and local school systems to involve parents in decisions regarding their child needs. In cases where the child has no parents, none can be located, or the child is a ward of the state, a parent surrogate must be appointed to represent the child and protect the child’s rights in matters relating to identification, evaluation and placement in a special education program.

Employees of the state education agency, the local school district or any agency involved in the education or care of the child can’t be a surrogate parent. Anyone who has a conflict with the interests of the child are also prohibited from serving as a surrogate parent.

Contact Susie Padilla at 832-223-0400 if you are interested in being or surrogate parent or if you have questions.
