Lamar Educational Awards Foundation (LEAF) Awards District Teachers with over $325k in Grants

Dec 09, 2024 | Lamar CISD Communications

December 9, 2024 – Rosenberg, Texas – For 350 Lamar Consolidated ISD teachers, the holiday season came early after the District’s Lamar Educational Awards Foundation (LEAF) awarded them $325,104.54 during this school year’s Grant Express, which will fund more than 148 classroom innovation grants—up 48 grants from last year.

On Dec. 4, LEAF hosted the “Grant Express” for the 2024-2025 school year where 81 representatives loaded buses and traveled throughout the District to surprise teachers in their classrooms with giant checks. Representatives included foundation partners, district administrators, community members, Lamar CISD Board of Trustees, and LEAF Board Members.

Lamar Consolidated High School teacher Jessica Lobitz, who received a grant for a total of $1,495, is in her first-year teaching after a career as a registered nurse for 13 years. She spoke on the importance of being a visual learner and says the grant will help supply mannequins and additional health supplies, such as crutches and a new wheelchair.

“I’m trying to utilize my knowledge and apply it to [my students],” Lobitz said. “We are really trying to build this Health Science program, and it benefits us as a community because our kids are the ones who are going to take care of us. The more I can give to them, the more better off they will be.”

During the application process, 389 different projects were submitted for consideration, and then thoroughly reviewed and scored by the foundation committee members and volunteers. A total of 42 campuses received grants.

Awarded projects included activities such as exploring artificial intelligence in healthcare, educational field trips, simultaneously teaching literacy and STEAM projects. Teachers will use these grants to elevate the learning experience for all students within Lamar CISD.

"On behalf of the Education Foundation, we are proud to invest over $325,000 in grants to support innovative projects that enhance student learning,” said LEAF Executive Director Kameela Lewis. “As our district experiences ‘hyper’ growth, the need for creative solutions in the classroom is more important than ever. These grants empower our dedicated teachers to inspire and engage students, while our Foundation remains committed to meeting the evolving needs of Lamar CISD, ensuring every student has the opportunity to succeed."

LEAF is grateful to many special guests who joined the event including representatives from PBK, Stantec, Brazos Valley Credit Union, Equitable Advisors, HEB and Pfluger Architects. In addition, the volunteer lunch was sponsored by Firehouse Subs – Rosenberg.

If you are interested in supporting the mission of LEAF, you can make a tax-deductible donation and become a Friend of the Foundation by emailing [email protected].
