Meet Harry Wright
Harry Wright is a native of San Angelo, Texas, where he graduated from Blackshear High School in 1951. Wright was a proud member of the Blackshear football team, which won the Class AA State Football Championship his senior year.
In the fall of 1951, he enrolled at Prairie View A&M University on a football scholarship. At Prairie View, he was a member of the 1953 national championship football team and captain of the team the following year. In 1956, Wright graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. His two passions in life, education and football, came together after graduating as he began coaching at Fairview High School in Linden, TX before eventually relocating to the Richmond/Rosenberg area.
In the fall of 1957, Wright joined the Lamar CISD family as a science teacher and coach at A.W. Jackson High School in Rosenberg. After integration in 1966, Wright joined the Lamar Consolidated High School faculty as a physical education/health teacher and football coach. He was promoted to assistant principal in 1970 and soon after obtained his Master of Science degree in Counseling and Guidance, and later became the associate principal for the Lamar Consolidated High School Annex. When B.F. Terry High School opened its doors in 1980, Wright transferred down the road and became Terry’s first campus principal. He remained at Terry until his retirement in 1991.
Outside of school, Wright maintained his passion for serving his community and the youth of the area. In the summers before he became an administrator, you could often find him managing a local pool and providing many students of color with jobs and free swim lessons. Additionally, Wright served on the YMCA Board of Directors and the Rosenberg Planning Commission.
In retirement, Wright still served Lamar CISD as the Supervisor of Newsome Building Maintenance and his commitment to educating Lamar CISD students continued as a substitute principal.
Among his many honors and achievements, Wright has been awarded Lamar CISD Administrator of the Year, the Outstanding Service Award from the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals, the Pilgrim Journey Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Greater Houston Football Coach Distinguished Service Award.
Despite his multiple football championships and professional honors, Wright’s most treasured achievement is his family. He has been married for 63 years to Ida Brown Wright and together they have three children and five grandchildren. He currently resides in Richmond, Texas.
