Special Programs at Velasquez Elementary

Balcony Awards- Given to students who are on their best behavior at all times.

Reading Night- Designed to get parents more involved in their child’s education by promoting reading at home.

Wildcat Run- Designed to promote fitness and exercise. Students qualify during the year to take part in an end of the year race.

Student Council - Students' homerooms from grades 3-5 exhibit leadership skills through representation and community service.

Houston Chronicle Spelling Bee - Students in grades 3-5 compete to be able to take part at the county and regional levels.

UIL - Teams of students in grades 2-5 compete along with elementary teams from other schools in the district in spelling, ready writing, poetry reading, storytelling, and other elementary eUniversity Interscholastic League events.

Velasquez Choir- Students in 4th and 5th grade participate after school in a choir under the direction of your music teacher. They give a performance in the spring.

Gifted and Talented Program - The GT Facilitator coordinates enrichment activities for kindergarten through the 5thgrade.

Grade-level Meetings - Teachers meet by grade levels to coordinate efforts to accommodate student needs.

Professional Learning Communities (PLCs)- Teachers meet with the campus specialists and administration to discuss current trends in education and investigate new methods in teaching through book studies, internet resources, and other forms of research.

Televised Announcements- Students act as news anchors, reporters, directors, cameramen, and computer video-board operators while presenting the morning announcements to the rest of the school.
